Report to the police more easily and quickly with just your voice!
An AI voice reporting service that allows you to alert the police by shouting just one word.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Challenge from my own experience
“How might we quickly report to the police?”
How I started…
In 2017, I encountered a scene of attempted murderer and reported it to the police. This experience made me deeply consider if there was a way to make reporting to the police faster and more convenient. I thought this experience was not unique to me, and there were many issues with various police mobilizations in news articles.
Inconveniency of the police report system
Journey to find an answer
The severity of random crimes is growing day by day. The foundation's data shows that 71.9% of women feel anxious about crime, higher than men's 56.4%, especially among those in their 20s and 30s.
by Statistics Korea etc
Increasing women's safety concerns due to the rise in random crimes
DESK RESEARCH
Trends in anxiety about crime damage
We surveyed 137 Korean women in order to
• Learn about what pain points about their safety concerns
• Learn about women’s perceptions of police reports
SURVEY
Korean women have high safety anxiety and feel awkward about reporting to the police
Q. When do you feel fear and what do you do?
81%
80%
When walking alone at night
Pretended to call someone or make a phone call
Q. Have you ever passed up reporting to the police?
Q. Why are you reluctant to report to the police?
50%
Unfamiliar with reporting to the police.
45%
The matter seemed too trivial to report
We conducted 5 qualitative user interviews & to get more insights. We also visited the police station and conducted two interviews with police officers.
USER INTERVIEWS
Police :
“ In cases of sexual harassment, the victim is required to provide evidence that proves they were harmed by the perpetrator. However, obtaining such evidence can be difficult because victims may feel embarrassed or ashamed.”
Woman :
“I've been too scared to report to the police before. And I keep a phone call going with others when I'm scared and walking home.”
Victim :
“Since I met the culprit, I have suffered greatly mentally. What should I have to get out of this pain?
ETHNOGRAPHY
During the five-day journey home, our team members recorded and summarized the moments they felt threatened by crime and the emotions that followed.
Self-Record
We tracked the commuting routes of five students walking home late at night after university using a proximity tracking method. All participants experienced fear of crime during their commute, and there was a need for alternative solutions to address this issue.
Proximity Tracking
We synthesized our research with AffinityDiagrams.
Synthesis
Problems
Lack of a quick & easy police report system
Fear of going home at night
Difficulty gathering evidence that a crime has been committed
Voice is an excellent tool for quickly conveying emergency situations
Strategies
Need a way to calm our fears without having to call a friend
Need to automatically collect evidence upon reporting
Solution
Offer an AI voice reporting system
Provides navigation that provides safe directions
Provides evidence data collection function

“How might we create a voice police reporting service that aids in evidence collection and provides information on nearby safe evacuation areas?”

STORYBOARD
We conducted 5 user testing on our wireframe and iterated on developing the user interface design
WIREFRAME & USABILITY TESTS
In this project, we used various ethnography methods such as proximity tracking and self-voice recording. Therefore, from the point of view of victims, police officers, and app users, we caught the most effective interaction to respond quickly, and that was a service that could report to the police only with voice. After starting from the inconvenience I experienced and finishing the project, I learned that a deep empathy for the user is necessary no matter what project I do in the future. As a result, it was a project where I learned that UX can have a positive impact on society, and it closely matched my values of pursuing the public interest.
